False teeth which are fixed permanently to your jawbone with an implant (or anchor) are commonly called ‘dental implants’. They are an alternative to having a bridge fitted or to wearing dentures (although sometimes removable dentures are held in place by implants).
Alongside false teeth, the actual implants have developed greatly in the past few years and many of our patients choose dental implants – even though they tend to be more expensive that dentures or a bridge.
The type of implant used (they are invariably made of titanium but have different shapes to suit particular jawbones) will affect how long it is before the false tooth or teeth can be fitted – in some cases it may be up to four months.
We will always discuss with you the likely length of treatment as well as the choice of material for the false tooth or teeth.
Thorough oral hygiene maintenance at home and regular visits to our hygienists should mean your dental implants last a lifetime.
